About the Force

Grampian Police employs around 2,600 staff in its Aberdeen Headquarters and the forty-four other Police Offices to provide a modern, professional policing service to the communities of North-east Scotland.

The Forces serves over 530,000 people in a very diverse area of 3373 square miles, stretching from the Cairngorm Mountains in the west to the Moray and Aberdeenshire coasts to the north and east. The region comprises the city of Aberdeen, several towns, many villages and a large rural area with a corresponding variety of industries, most notably oil and gas, agriculture, fishing and tourism.

In addition to normal duties, the Force has additional responsibilities for policing offshore installations in Scottish waters and for Royalty Protection in connection with the local residences occupied by various members of the Royal Family for frequent periods during the year.

Grampian Police dates from 16 May 1975 when the former forces of Aberdeen City Police and the Scottish North Eastern Counties Constabulary (SNECC) amalgamated on the re-organisation of local government.

Local government structures in Scotland have changed since then but Police Forces have retained their 1975 areas. For Grampian Police, this involves serving the three local authority areas of Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Moray. Councillors from all three authorities are represented on the Grampian Joint Police Board which oversees the work of the Force.
